Marina Del Ray, California (July 16th) – A little more than 13 months ago, 17yr old California teen Zac Sunderland embarked on a journey to become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe. At 10am, July 16th, Sunderland sailed in to the harbor of Marina Del Ray, CA to break the world record as the youngest sailor ever to sail around the world solo and the first to do it under the age of 18.
“It’s awesome to be home, it was an incredible journey for me, I look forward to spending time with my friends and family”, said Zac Sunderland who just completed the 28,000 mile journey.
Sunderland was greeted with much fanfare with news helicopters hovering above and scores of journalists from both national and international news agencies waiting to document the adventure. A crowd of about 250 well-wishers including key sponsors Mastronardi Produce/SUNSET® and Produce For Kids, were on hand to welcome Zac back home.
“We are very proud to be associated with this world record breaking event and we applaud Zac for his courage and determination to complete this journey,” stated Chris Veillon, Marketing Manager. Mastronardi Produce/SUNSET® was one of the original sponsors that signed on to support Sunderland in June 2008 as he set out to become the youngest person ever to sail around the world solo. During the course of Zac’s adventure, Mastronardi shipped fresh greenhouse vegetables to Sunderland to eat while on the high seas.
When asked what his next adventure would be, Sunderland confidently responded that he was considering climbing Mount Everest as well as sailing to Antarctica with his boat Intrepid.
