Refrigeration Systems Operator

Mastronardi Produce/SUNSET® is the leading greenhouse grower in North America with facilities all over the world. We have an immediate opening for a Refrigeration Systems Operator for the Maintenance team located in Livonia, Michigan.

We are seeking an Operator with previous experience in USDA type facilities. This person will help support the plant's safety philosophy of zero accidents and will play a key role in driving a strong and robust Refrigeration Excellence Program through Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) philosophy. Candidate will be responsible for overseeing ammonia refrigeration, and support equipment. They will help develop, implement and analyze working methodologies in order to improve efficiency and reliability. Through TPM they will help develop a culture of zero losses while delivering results. This position is responsible for compliance to all Plant policies, procedures, safety and sanitation rules and governmental regulations.

Primary Responsibilities:

Act, Regulations and Codes

The candidate is expected to be technically strong in regard to understanding ammonia refrigeration systems and able to locate information relating to the operation, maintenance, inspection, and testing of plant equipment resourcing the:
• Technical Standards & Safety
• Operating Engineers Regulation and Directors Orders
• Mechanical Refrigeration Code
• OSHA PSM Procedures for systems over 10,000 lbs

Safety
The candidate is expected to be able to fully explain the dangers associated with the operation of a refrigeration plant and state the precautions to be taken to minimize or prevent such dangers. This includes Lock Out Tag out, Confined Space and Hot Work Permit’s, Emergency Planning and Response.

Operation
The candidate is expected to be able to trouble shoot electrical and PLC based control systems as well as answer examination questions as they relate to the operation, maintenance and the management of the refrigeration system.
• TPM or other continuous improvement methodology a plus

Processes
The candidate is expected to be able to state the application, list, explain, describe, and/or sketch the following:
• Working definition of Ammonia refrigeration plant safety and ammonia refrigeration principles
• PID development
• Operate and achieving stability
• Fundamentals of system troubleshooting
• System performance evaluation
• Power factor measurement and correction
• AC frequency drives and their use in Ammonia Refrigeration
• Basic Electrical Theory

Industrial Systems and Systems Operations
The candidate is expected to be able to state the application, list, explain, describe, and/or sketch the following:
• Multi-stage and cascade refrigeration systems
• Purge systems, oil stills
• Liquid receivers, coolers
• Operating troubles encountered by the following:
- oil, moisture or water in the system
- condensers, evaporators and regulators
- refrigerant content (high or low)
- by high/low compressor discharge temperatures
• The lubrication requirements and problems (that may be encountered) for ammonia, and freon.

Thermodynamics of Refrigeration and Calculations
The candidate is expected to be able to:
• Explain the thermodynamics of vapor compression, the Pressure-Enthalpy Chart
• Perform calculations to solve for:
- Coefficient of performance (COP) for heat engines, refrigerating machines and heat pumps.
- Refrigerating effect, mass of refrigerant circulated (flow rate).
- Piston displacement, theoretical power
- Heat removed and/or ice made in a given time period
- Compressor capacity expressed as ton’s of refrigeration

Job requirements:

Defined Classes and Licenses Required
The candidate is expected to have satisfactorily completed the following classes and certifications:
- Industrial Refrigeration Operator 1 thru 4
- PSM/RMP Standard 29 CFR 1910.119
- CARO licensed [desired]
- Incident Commander & Hazmat Trained
- SCBA & Encapsulated Suit Trained
• HS Diploma or equivalent
• Industry or manufacturer’s technician certifications desired [CARO]
• Must be at least 18 years of age to work in warehouse
• Has 3+ years experience
• Obtain Powered Industrial Certification for lift trucks, pallet jacks and man lifts preferred, but not necessary.
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 75 pounds
• Must have own transportation and a valid driver’s license
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include holidays and weekends
